Lighthouses are part of Old Quebec heritage and were the guardians of the maritime activities and adventures when navigation technologies were not mature and modern. These lighthouses played a pivotal role in these adventures and are still standing tall with their charismatic appearance on the rocky shore of St. Laurence river and islands till Gaspe peninsula.

One of them is 200 Years old Ile Verte Lighthouse on Île Verte in Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs, Quebec, Canada.

Learned from Wiki before my travel that the lighthouse was completed in 1809, it is the oldest lighthouse on the Saint Lawrence River and the third oldest in Canada.

I was thinking from some time to spend some night near a lighthouse to see the grandeur of these old architectures but never got a chance until when I booked Ile Verte Lighthouse for 2 night stays. The 200 years old lighthouse now provides quite a few air-bnb like lodging facilities. Couple of them are inside the lighthouse and few of them are nearby caretakers chalets. Grouped with one of my best friends, we started one night to reach Rivière-du-Loup.

Rivière-du-Loup is 6 and a half hours drive from Ottawa. But we started with enough time knowing that we would take some breaks. The drive was through Montreal and Quebec City and we reached the ferry at the dawn of the next day. It was quite foggy and we had an hour time to cross the river.

While waiting I noticed a couple of American Goldfinch playing nearby and hunting for worms. Though I didn’t have any telephoto lens but managed to get some pictures of these little beauties.

And then with a whistle, a big ferry arrived.

It didn’t take a long time to go inside the ferry with our vehicle. It was an experience to park the vehicle inside the deck of the ship.

When the ferry started with a long whistle, a thick fog started rolling and covering the river. Few minutes everything was covered but the expert captain started his boat in thick fog.

I was enjoying every bit of that voyage while others were either seating inside their vehicles or standing in some designated areas.

It took around 30 minutes when we realized that the shore of the island was appearing from the fog. The experienced captain tagged the boat with the wooden platform with accuracy. We started our cars and got out form the boat. Our destination was the lighthouse which was the opposite side of the island. It was a nice scenic drive and we reached our destination in 15 minutes. The caretaker welcomed us warmly and showed us our designated rooms. We were tired from the overnight journey but didn’t want to waste any time in sleeping.

We came out of the room and looked carefully to the lighthouse – what a white beauty it was. From its historic note, we understood the lighthouse is guiding the ships since 1827 for 134 years.

Though we were a bit tired of overnight driving from Ottawa, we didn’t want to waste much time. We started exploring the island and found some beautiful places.

The time went in exploring the island and having some food before we came back to the lighthouse in the afternoon to take some rest. I wanted to have some photography session in evening and night so rest was essential at that time. When I woke couple after a couple of hours nap, the island was clear from the morning fog and the island was having some perfect light for photography.

This time I flew my drone to capture some aerial perspective. There was strong wind coming from the seaside, but when the DJI Drone took off I found the machine and its camera system are quite steady. The drone gave me some superb perspective of aerial photography what I have started very recently.

After some flying session, I was eagerly waiting for the sunset. I wanted to see how the west horizon looks like while the sun touches it. After waiting almost for an hour the light started becoming soft and the sun was at the horizon. And then I enjoyed some beautiful sunset over the horizon.

There was no one except my friend and I and the color in the sky were changing dramatically. And when I look at him I found an interesting frame of a photographer waiting for his best shot amidst of nature.

Photographer Friend

A few more frames which I was able to make that memorable evening.

Soon after this evening photo session, the night arrived on the island with real darkness. At the dinner table, we were very hopeful to see the stars in the sky and was planning for some perfect stargazing and star photography but again fog started rolling out on the island. And in half an hour the island was covered by a thick cover of fogs.

I remained awake almost the whole night in the hope the fog will disappear but when I hit the bed at 3 in the morning the fog became denser than ever.

The next morning was to drive back to Ottawa again to the normal daily life with a promise to come to this amazing place again to explore more.

Some photos from that night.

Some important Travel Information if anyone wants to travel this place

How to Go:

The best way to travel to Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec from Ottawa or from Montreal is by driving a car. There is no rail service or I have not seen any other transport service to reach Rivière-du-Loup Boat station. One can park the car at the ferry terminal or take the car by the ferry to the islands. To take the car to the island the charge of the ticket are $ 47 for cars and $7.10 for Motorcycles. A car should not exceed in size of not exceeding 6.4 m in length x 2.44 m in width. Buying tickets in advance is advisable and can be done over the phone. Advantage of taking the car or motorcycle is to cover the entire island which is quite big.

Where to Stay:

The best place to stay at the Lighthouse itself. The caretaker of the lighthouse has few rooms which can be booked in advance. Apart from the lighthouses, there are few Airbnb available on the island but that can be far from the lighthouse.

Refer Quebec Maritime Website for Booking information.

What to Eat:

The island has a handful of restaurants. The cuisines are good, tasty but maybe a little expensive than normal which is understandable. If anyone staying at LightKeeprs rooms, food can be available there also. Confirm while booking.

What to Do:

This is a place for the pure nature lover; no city hustle-bustle. You can roam the entire island by feet, bike or by car. Very scenic everywhere. Just enjoy the nature. At night when the lights are on in the century-old lighthouse, that is really beautiful.

When to Go:

Only avoid the winter season. All other season has its own beauty.

Our neighbor province is beautiful from all aspects starting from its natural beauty, rich French culture, and fascinating cuisine. For me, being in Ottawa it’s just crossing the Ottawa river and enter to that province. I didn’t want to miss a chance to see the fall colors in Quebec during a weekend last fall. After a quick search, we booked a beautiful chalet through AirBnB near Lac-Supérieur in the first week of October. The plan was to reach the chalet by Friday evening and to spend the weekend exploring the beautiful location of Lac Superieur. As usual as being an IT professional, the last minute office obligations forced us to start late from Ottawa. We informed the host about our late arrival.
A two and half hours drive from Ottawa to the chalet was nothing exceptional but a straight forward drive. We didn’t waste much time that night as we wanted to explore the area from the morning.

The morning started with quite a disappointment. The dawn welcomes us with the overcast sky and very windy weather. We had our breakfast really quick and started to explore the location. The place was covered by the thick foliage of autumn color. Instead of roaming endlessly, I started towards those locations which I noted down from my location search homework.

It was one bend of the road where a stream was flowing through the midst of the colorful forest. We stopped for some time to take some pictures.

Stream in Quebec

After spending some time at this beautiful place, I started again and went towards one end of the Lac Superieur. The lake was quite big and the road went through numerous bends and curves. In one such curves, I found one place to park my car and this time I flew my DJI Phantom to try some aerial perspective of the place. The advantage of aerial photography is that “Auto Exposure” mode of DJI camera can auto correct the dull lighting condition due to the overcast weather and can provide a perfectly exposed image. This exactly happened when the drone flew up and the camera tilted to get the bird-eye-view. The view from above was fantastic and the feel of observing the beauty of the fall color from above was just like flying by helicopter.

I only realized that the watch was ticking towards afternoon when I suddenly felt very hungry. So it was time to take a break and also to recharge the Drone battery.

A quick google search helped to find a nearby restaurant and we rushed to have some food. There was no way to have a leisure lunch as the time was very little and we wanted to explore the place as much as possible. Post lunch we started driving again in search of some good locations and found a quiet beach place where we stopped for another photo session. The drone flew as I wished and captured some aerial pictures.

After this break, we started again for some new destinations and I was endlessly looking for some interesting spot while driving. In this endeavor, I found one small sandy beach by the side of a small stream which I consider one of the best spots we found during this trip. There was a small stream went through the forest while a bridge helped us to park exactly entrance of the beach and the view was awesome from there.

The Parking Spot

By that time a wireless charger helped me to recharge my drone battery completely so I knew I can fly it at least for 20 minutes. I didn’t want to waste much time as the lighting condition was not favorable since morning and this was the only window I got on the entire trip with some good light.

After parking the car, I walked far from the tourist spot to respect the local laws. Here, the local law says you can not fly a drone near the people. I was sure the nobody wouldn’t mind if I did so, as the fellow travelers here in Canada are very peaceful and are welcoming. Still, I did a solitary walk towards an empty area where I found the drone flying could be safe and be compliant with the local laws.

When the flying machine went up and started streaming me the live view of the surroundings it was amazingly beautiful. I found the entire valley is burning with rioting colors. The spiral view of the stream through this autumn foliage was amazingly beautiful. In the next 30 mins, I took a few pictures of this place before the machine started sending me the low battery signal and forced me to land the flying machine.

Here are some pictures of this voyage.

Since migrating to Canada I didn’t get any chance to pack my bags, take my cameras and start getting into the wild again. Settling down in a new country, time, money – nothing was in my favor though the “Bug of Travel” was continuously biting me. So, when last Christmas I found a week-long leave in my new job place I didn’t want to waste the holiday session this time. Canadian Rockies was calling me since I arrived in Canada, and I wanted to see the Rockies in Winter so I welcome this opportunity. One thing was very sure that we cannot expect the torques lakes of the Rockies in Winter which we see in calendars and greetings cards but at the same time, we were very sure this would be going to a different experience altogether. While I was busy planning the locations Rima took the ownership of booking tickets and accommodation. We booked Emerald Lake Lodge in British Columbia for our stays in the Rockies and wanted to explore the region being based at Emerald Lake Lodge.

Day 1: 22nd Dec, Arrival at Calgary and then Drive Towards British Columbia

The day started very early in Ottawa because the outbound flight was at 7:15 AM. And the small jet took off us at the right time from Ottawa International Airport with a temperature outside -15C. When we reached Calgary, the temperature dropped another few degrees, but it was a clear and bright day. We picked up our rental car and started toward our destination. The GPS bypassed the city of Calgary and soon we hit Highway 1 aka Trans-Canada Highway. It was quite a long drive to see the first glimpse of the Rockies but when it started we jumped in joy.

Route Map from Calgary to Emerald Lake Lodge at B.C

The drive was pleasant, and we found the sign of the Emerald Lake Lodge after 2 and half hours of driving. In the last 1 hour of drive, the landscape has been changed completely from plain to the Rockies, surrounded by mountains and plateaus. And in between, we stopped in a Service Station and had some food.

Winter Road in the Rockies. Was driving a “Red” Jeep

The lodge has outside parking from where the Lodge Shuttles pick up the tourists and transfers to the lodge areas. It was quite convenient to follow those steps and reach the entrance of the lodge. The first site of the resort was mind-blowing; it was a fairy tale set up in midst of the white nature. The lodge is exactly at the shore of the Emerald Lake and a bridge is connecting the lodge over a stream from the main road. Everything was frozen white at that time, but there was one area outside the lodge where I could see some amount of water. The reason could be the geothermal effect of the region, which I used later for one of my photography purposes.

First view of Emerald Lake Lodge

We have been given a beautiful cottage, just on the bank of the lake. But in the winter, there was no point of being on lake shore while everything was frozen and covered in white layers of snow.

Frozen Landscape. Took this by iPhone when I saw the gentleman walking in the snow

The rest of the day and the afternoon were spent in leisure and enjoying the awesome food cooked at the Lodge’s own restaurant. I was waiting for the evening as I had a plan to execute some photographic opportunities around the lake resort.

In Mountains, the dusk and evenings are very short – you will not realize when sudden darkness has arrived just from being an afternoon at one point. I was looking for a time when I can get the cottage glowing in human-made light but there was natural light too to capture the surroundings. So by 4-30 PM, I left the warmness of the wooden fireplace at the cottage and I came down below the entrance bridge where I have seen a pool of fresh water while arriving.

It was bone freezing cold though I was well wrapped with a couple of layers, caps, gloves, and white glasses to protect my eyes. I walked down a trail from the wooden bridge and started walking through the water trail.

Winter Bridge: The Venue Which I Selected for the Evening Lodge Shoot. Temp was -20C

The waiting game started for the right time. This was not only the light which was decreasing fast but the temperature too. And then, when I realized I finally get the right moment, I took 4 to 5 shots of the cottage with the hue of dusk and with the mountain in the backdrop.

After spending some time, I knew I got which I wanted. And in this effort, while I started to look at some different shots, suddenly I heard a small crack under my right foot and immediately I discovered myself submerged in thigh-deep water – the initial feeling was good because I felt the underneath water of the ice layer was warm, but the problem started as soon as I took my leg out of the water. In a few seconds, I started losing all my senses in my right leg. To avoid frost-byte I didn’t have any other option but to leave the venue and rushed towards my resort with all my belongings. Tripod was giving them good support for walking when one leg started losing its sense. After reaching the resort, the first remedy was to keep the leg in warm water. And then stretching the leg in front of the wood fireplace.

Then I looked back, what I have achieved and I was happy to see that I was able to take the image which I planned. The Emerald Lake Lodge with the reflection and the huge mountain in the backdrop.

I was okay after the hot water treatment in half an hour. The day was started very early for all of us. So we didn’t make ourselves late for an early supper and went to bed early. I must mention one thing, the sleep inside the cottage for the next few days remains amazing with the sound of wood burning at the wooden fireplace which we don’t get nowadays from our advance gas burning fireplaces.

We started our second day with an early morning sunrise view from the Emerald Lake

Sunrise from the frozen Emerald Lake Bed

And before we start our journey for the day, I made a quick visit to my favourite spot of last evening’s small adventure and found that the stream has made a spot of water where the ice was cracked. I strongly believe there was a Geo-Thermal area that was making the water pond in -20C.

The Photography Location

After having a super heavy breakfast, we were ready to hit the road which was as usual clear and straight. There was no sight of snow, but the bone-chilling cold was accompanying us. Though we were traveling towards the most visited place of Banff – “The Fairmont Hotel”, I was almost enjoying a car-free highway driving due to the peak winter season.

Rockies Road and the Red Jeep

I stopped at many places which were very usual for my photography adventure and took more than double time than usual to reach Fairmont hotel and Lake Louise. The lake became a solid Ice Bed at that temperature and was opened for winter activities. Due to our winter visit, we couldn’t see the magnificent hotel on the bank of a turquoise lake but wondering on the frozen lake bed was fun and it doubled up when we decided for a horse-sled around the lake.

After a fun ride on a horse-pulled sledge we decided to head back to our resort as the light started fading out and the road towards Moraine Lake was closed. Moraine lake remains unseen in this trip so we decided to have a relaxed evening at the resort. We drove the same scenic road back to the hotel.

Day 3: 24th Dec, Exploring Jasper National Park

On 24th Dec we started towards Jasper national park. Google Map was saying this should be 3 and half hours drive but it was more than 6 hours drive for us because of the numerous stops we took. Jasper national park too is part of the Canadian Rockies and is known for its pristine blue lakes and mountains. From the landscape perspective, there was no difference between Banff and Jasper except for what I experienced Jasper is more forested, more remote, and less hotel-infested places compared to the Banff.

Map of Day 3 Trip

The road through the Rockies was as usual beautiful, but driving was slow due to the winter condition of the roads. And we were not in hurry to miss any flight, so we enjoyed a pleasant drive through Jasper national park. A couple of times we saw a few Moose and a few Elk deers roaming in the valley of the Rockies in search of food. In Winter, scarcity of foods forces the local animals either to go to hibernation or to roam a large area. Deer, Moose, Elk, or Mule normally don’t go to hibernation through their activity in winter is limited, we experienced quite a few times few groups of Elks and Moose, especially wherever there was a sight of water due to the hot springs.

Jasper Landscape

Banff to Jasper was a long drive and winter conditions forced us to drive slow. So it was late when we were rushing towards Maligne Lake but I was stopping whenever there was a small opportunity to take some pictures. Because of winter, the photography opportunity was very less so I was trying to get as much as I could at that time.

We were rushing towards Maligne Lake as daylight was fading and I had a few kilometers to reach the destination but at a certain point in the bend of the road, it was so beautiful – a frozen lake, road blended towards the mountain, and the last light of the day kissing the mountain range – I couldn’t resist myself to stop and to embrace the harsh cold outside from the warmness of the vehicle. It was so serene and so calm; I realized I didn’t see even a single-vehicle, animal, bird, or people on this road minimum for 3 hours.

And it was a secluded feeling that we three were the only living beings on that part of the earth at that time.

On The Way to Maligne Lake

When GPS was telling me Maligne lake was almost a bend ahead, and I was rushing to get the last light of the day, a part of the landscape drew my attention while we were crossing a small bridge. I was unaware of this location from my pre-visit study of the location. I stopped my vehicle and was overwhelmed by the beautiful scenery in front of me while the last rays of the sun touched the peaks around the Maligne lake, there was an area of water in -20C where the reflection of the peak was stunningly beautiful. I assume the same geo-thermal possibility would be the only reason to make some part of the lake not frozen in that well sub-zero temperature. However, leaving science behind, this was the time to enjoy the beauty of nature and frame it through the lenses.

Evening approaches over Maligne Lake.

And the Opposite side of the bridge was equally beautiful.

When we reached the parking of the famous lake, the sun was not visible in the sky and the last rays of the day just kissing the top of the mountain. I rushed, and after taking a couple of frames I realized I actually standing on the lake bed to make the last picture of the day.

The Last Ray of the Sun Kissing the Mountains of Frozen Maligne Lake

After taking these shots there was nothing much to do. These lakes are very popular destinations of summer. All the lakes in the Rockies are full of activities like Kayaking, and boating in the emerald waters but in winter handful of crazy guys like me and skiers were the only tourists in this frigid temperature.

It was again almost a 5 plus hours drive back to Banff which is to be driven now in the pitch dark. When I started my car, there was no one around us, a few tourists who were there earlier, now vanished. The driving was as usual through mountain roads, but this time with headlights on and the visibility was only with few feet. The sky was clear, we could see the milky ways but never dared to capture the night sky in that temperature. There was no chance to stop anywhere, so a straightforward road was driven with the utmost care due to the winter situation and with very less visibility. And when we reached our cottage our clock was touching 11. We picked up some dry foods from a gas station outside of Banff town because at that time resort’s restaurant was closed.

Day 4: 25th Dec, Banff, and Vermillion Lake and X-Mas celebration at the resort

On the day of X-Mas it was very special at the resort. Everyone was in a festive mood. We had a lazy start and decided to see other areas of the national park. As soon as we touched the national highway 1 from the connecting road from the resort we noticed a group of Elk grazing down in the valley. When we stopped our car to see their activities, suddenly the group started moving towards the highway and in a few minutes started crossing the road one by one creating a traffic block for sometimes. Nobody minds though being blocked but patiently wait till the last one crossed the road and vanished inside the alpine forests.

The car needed fuel and we needed a small break. When we started we could see the light on the Rockies started being soft.

Banff town to Vermilion Lake was mere 3 Km drive and honestly speaking in that frozen kingdom I hardly could understand the lake. It was all white so instead of finding the lake bed, my interest was to find out a good viewpoint for the sunset.

In one point, which was being confirmed by google map that we were at Vermilion lake, we observed the beautiful light on the mountain.

My eyes were searching for a point where I can make some sunset photo but the dreading cold hindering to explore the area. To find a location I already took a turn from the GPS mentioned road and we were on the country road and there I found some area of interest. There were places where all the water plants dried and frozen inside the knee-deep ice and snow. It was a white desert feeling for me and for my lenses.

This was the final evening at the Rockies of our first visit, and the night started arriving while we started driving down from the Gondola center towards our resort. We know we will go back to the city life and daily work again from tomorrow, but this was an awesome experience of X-mas vacation which Banff and Jasper have offered us.

Some Useful Travel Information for the readers

Where to Go

The Canadian Rockies has a few renowned National Parks like Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, Yoho National Park, and many more. The best idea is to decide on one place to anchor and explore the rest of the area as per the day’s availability. This is a vast mountainous landscape but well connected by the roads.

How to Reach

Banff National park could be the gateway of entering the Canadian Rockies. Calgary International Airport is the closest airport in the park and is just one and a half hour drive to enter the national park area. The other option is Edmonton International Airport which is a little more than three and a half hours drive. However, the driving distance depends on the location of the accommodation. Many rental agencies like Hertz, Avis, and Budget are available at both of the airports, but making a prior booking is always advisable.

Where to Stay

There are lots of hotels, resorts, gateways available in these national parks. It completely depends on personal choice. As for me, I neither stay in Banff nor in Jasper, but I drove to Emerald Lake Lodge which is in Yoho National Park in British Columbia.

Some of the Best Places to Visit

Banff Town, Banff Spring Hotel, Lake Louise, Chateau Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Bow Lake, Helen Lake, Catherine Lake, Emerald Lake, Vermilion Lake, Maligne Lake, Icefields Parkway

Best Time To Visit

Summer is beautiful here with turquoise blue lakes and tranquil weather. But would be quite crowded as these all are very popular destinations. Autumn and winter have their own beauty. Winter is very harsh but a completely frozen landscape provides a different feel and no tourist except serious skiers and winter lovers.

Ladakh means “Land of High Passes” and from the ancient time, these high passes of the Himalayas have been explored by Explorers, Monks, Hermits Mountaineers and even by the ancient military forces. This place is not only rich with natural beauty but also nourished with cultural and religious significance from the decade after decade. Currently, located in the Jammu and Kashmir state in Northern India, this place invites travelers and tourists from all over the world seeking for Natural Beauty, Mountaineering, Adventure Tourism and of course for Buddism.

In my all trips to Himalaya, this place remains one of my favorite with the striking beauty of Landscapes, Mountains, Rivers, valleys, it’s unique wildlife and of course the peaceful and welcoming people of this region.

The following article is not a “Travelogue / Travel Diary” but would be a piece of travel information and description of a photographic destination of this place.

The Entry Point of this region is Leh, the prime town of the Leh District and the connecting point by Air and Road from other major Cities from India, mainly from New Delhi. Nowadays, air travel has been improved and quite a few Flight Operators are operating in this region serving daily flights. This was not the case even a few years before. If anyone wants to entry Ladakh by road, the option is to drive from Manali to Leh through awesomely scenic routes which go through the valleys and high Himalayan Mountains. If someone has enough time and truly wish to see the mountainous landscape, I will suggest having at least one trip to Leh or from Leh via road. However, the roads are narrow, steps and somewhere may be broken due to harsh weather but this is beautiful and has been passed through some of the world highest motorable passes.

Ok, Now let’s start the rest of this blog with Photos and Photo-Stories……

Going to Leh via road by Leh-Manali Highway

Arriving Leh & Exploring this Beautiful Town

As mentioned, Leh can be arrived either by Air or by Road. This town is full of hotels so accommodation will not be a problem but should be booked in well advance. One can enjoy Airport Pickup if that is booked in advance. Anyone is arriving Leh by Air should take a couple of days to rest in Leh town. Due to altitude gain, there is a chance of “Mountain Sickness” and you should allow your body to adjust this altitude gain. My advice to anyone who is reading this article that to take this very seriously as Mountain Sickness is very serious, it happens and if it happens, then you have to come down to normal altitude and consult a doctor.

Leh can be enjoyed in 2 days. The town has shops of colorful traditional dresses, Tibetan cultural items, and masks, and many more to explore.

I was at Ramnagar (Uttarakhand) in mid-February of 2011 for almost 15 days during my documentary film The Last Hope shooting. The film was extensively shot in the villages around Ramnagar. Ramnagar is known as the gateway of the world famous Jim Corbett National Park or Corbett Tiger Reserve. We were not sure whether we would get time to enter the park due to our strict schedule of filming Vultures outside the forest; however, we had a wish to manage some time and to visit the famous park.

At the end of our stay, we found that we collected almost all the footages what we wanted and we can spend at least one full day and one-half day visiting the park. At the 11th hour when we decided to visit the park we didn’t have any permit to do that. However, that didn’t become a big issue because during this stay we met Mr. Tiwari who was the Park Warden and a gentleman with vast knowledge of wildlife and about Corbett. With the same interest in wildlife and photography, we soon became good friends. He gave me special permission to visit the park and he offered me his own Bungalow at Dhikala, deep inside the forest to stay over the night. I was so grateful to him that for his kindness that we could visit the park which is always booked by the visitors from all over the world.

We could only manage one afternoon and one full day to enter the park from our busy shooting schedule. So, with all excitement one fine afternoon we entered the forest. Our location coordinator Yashpal was driving the vehicle. We were passing through the thick Sal forest by an open gypsy given by the forest department. Yashpal was telling many stories of tiger sighting. I was ready with my cameras and lenses that no opportunity should be missed. Suddenly we heard the alarm call of langur. We stopped and started following the alarm. A Langur throws alarm if it sees a tiger. Our adrenalin started running as the langur was not very far from us. But we couldn’t spot anything after waiting for a long time at that spot. The langur was not calling at that time and we decided to head straight because there might be a chance the tiger left that place. We started moving and after a few kilometers we again heard the call of Langur and this time we even could hear the call of crows. But we cannot see any movement inside the forest. We were feeling frustrated as we knew the tiger was very near but we couldn’t see anything. We met few more vehicles as all the drivers and guides with tourists were following those calls. But all our effort went in vain. We entered the park at 2 PM and we couldn’t spot a tiger till 5 PM. However, we have seen many spotted deer, langurs, wild boars, jackal, and variety of birds by then. But our all senses were looking for a tiger. It was then almost dusk; we decided to come outside the forest. Our fellow tourist already left quite before. Our Gypsy started moving towards the gate and we came out from the core to buffer zone soon. Suddenly we again heard the langur’s call and we could spot one elephant in a small meadow. We were then almost just a few kilometers before the entrance of the park. Our vehicle stopped near the elephant and Yashpal whispered: “Saab, Tiger” (Sir, there is a tiger). At that point, I could hear only some noise of breaking bones and it took me few more seconds to realize that there was a huge male tiger on a sambar kill deep inside the lantana bush just 15 feet away from our vehicle. We were hearing the calls from langur as the tiger was approaching towards its kill. For the first few minutes I forgot everything about the world. I was amazed to see the huge size of a wild tiger seating on its prey. The tiger was not very happy with the presence of the elephant and it was growling. I stood on the gypsy to take some images of the tiger, but there was no light and the tiger was inside the lantana bush. So make a clear image of the tiger was impossible. I was riding on the top of the open vehicle if I could manage any good image. In this time the elephant made a move towards the tiger and suddenly I heard a sound of thunder and a lightening effect in front of my eyes. The tiger roared and made a mock charge toward us. To my horror, it was not even a second when the tiger made the charge from a distance of a mere 15 feet and went back to its kill. The elephant didn’t waste much time to clear the area and moved back and I was hearing Yashpal was telling “Saab Ji Baith Jaiye” (Sir, Please sit down). But I couldn’t move. However, I came to my sense soon and took the seat in gypsy and then I realized even I couldn’t move my camera and the lenses. My all five senses were not working properly and the camera seemed very heavy to me. Phew, what an experience to face an angry wild male tiger. I could remember those few seconds in my whole life.

We came outside of the forest soon and went back to our guest house. At night after consuming a few cups of tea when I restored back my all senses I found there was one image came capturing the growling tiger in the bush.

The next day we went again inside the forest and started going towards Dhikala range. That night we were supposed to spend inside the forest at the Bungalow of Park Warden. We noticed lots of spotted deer, sambar, barking deer and variety of birds. But our heart jumped in joy when we spotted one elusive yellow-throated martin. It was such an amazing experience to see this rare species. We also spotted a handsome jackal just in front of us. He was very curious about us and was heading right towards us.

The cool night was awesome at Dhikala. The guest houses were surrounded by thick forest and a species of monkey was making sounds all around the night. A cool breeze was following from the river Ramganga. We went to bed early as we have to wake up very early in the next morning.

We woke up in next morning with the alarm calls of Sambar deer. But it was coming from the opposite side of the river. The morning was very cold. We started our journey again through the grassland of the forest. The whole forest was wrapped by thick mist. We headed towards the river from where the alarm call was coming. We noticed fresh pugmark of tiger but couldn’t notice a single after waiting for a long in cold. We spotted a beautiful Crested Kingfisher right on the top of a wooden pool on the river and then noticed a Sambar pair. Those were mating couple. The male was following the female on the river. They watched us carefully and then crossed the river slowly.

Then we moved to the Gharial Points of Ramganga and we could notice few Gharials basking in the Sun. Even we spotted some huge Golden Mahseer fishes in the clear water of Ramganga. While roaming inside the forest we again came across the line of Spotted Deer, Sambar and Wild Boars. Then we realized we had to come out from the jungle soon as that was our last day at Ramnagar and we had to start for Delhi post lunch.

Gharials of Ramganga River

So, it was the time to say goodbye to Corbett with a promise that we have to come back again and spent some days inside this amazing forest with amazing biodiversity. This time we couldn’t spend with the wildlife of the Corbett much due to our documentary film which was going on Asian Vultures, but by then we made many friends there and I am sure we will get the same warm hospitality whenever we will be back to this amazing tiger land.
